Roblyer Article!

In the article Tennyson pointed out that there is a difference between acquiring knowledge and employment of knowledge. He describes that acquiring knowledge would be verbal information and procedural knowledge. This would be your routine, technical learning that goes on in the classroom. Employment of knowledge would be putting that knowledge to use. Some examples of this are “contextual skills, cognitive strategies and creative processes.” Tennyson believed that 30% of time spent in class should be on acquiring knowledge and that the other 70% should be used on the employment of that knowledge. It reminds me of the old Chinese proverb that said, “You can feed a man a fish and feed him for a day or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” It's the same in education. In a classroom setting there has to be some initial direct instruction methods used to introduce students to the concepts being taught. I believe that the real learning comes from having the students actually utilize the knowledge to recognize the concepts in real world context.
